Temperament & companionship
Often friendly and inquisitive, Beagles were developed to work in packs. Many enjoy company but can find long stretches alone difficult. Their hunting background means small pets need careful separation and supervision.
Exercise & daily life
Combine daily walks with sniffing opportunities and food-search games. A secure garden and a leash matter: an interesting scent can override a recall cue. Plan for barking or baying rather than expecting a silent apartment companion.
Grooming & coat care
Brush the short double coat regularly, with more attention during shedding. Check floppy ears for redness or odor, and ask your vet about an appropriate cleaning routine. Keep nails short and maintain dental care.
Training & enrichment
Use short, reward-based sessions and practice recall in enclosed spaces. Keep food out of reach and teach a reliable leave-it cue. Scent games can give that persistence a useful outlet.
Health considerations
Discuss weight management, ear problems, eye conditions, and relevant inherited conditions with a vet. Ask breeders about recommended health testing and the parents' results; a short coat does not mean low overall care needs.
