Temperament & companionship
Many French Bulldogs enjoy human company and short play sessions. Sociability varies, and careful introductions and comfortable alone-time training are still necessary.
Exercise & daily life
Choose cooler times for short walks and monitor breathing closely. Avoid strenuous exercise and hot, humid conditions. Do not treat noisy or labored breathing as normal for the breed; ask a vet to assess it. Supervise near water because swimming may be difficult.
Grooming & coat care
Brush the short coat and check skin folds as advised by your vet. Keep folds clean and dry without using harsh products. Maintain nails and teeth, and investigate persistent itching rather than simply increasing baths.
Training & enrichment
Use rewards and brief sessions, with breaks for comfort. Harness fit, cooperative handling, and settling skills are practical priorities. Never push through breathing difficulty to finish a walk or training session.
Health considerations
Discuss brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, spinal conditions, skin disease, and eye problems. Ask about functional breathing assessment and other recommended screening. Insurance exclusions and the cost of specialist care deserve close attention.
