Temperament & companionship
Often outgoing and eager to engage, Goldens can also be exuberant, mouthy adolescents. Supervise children and teach all family members respectful interaction. Individual temperament and early experience matter.
Exercise & daily life
Offer daily walks, retrieving on suitable surfaces, sniffing, and mental work. Teach calm greetings and rest. Monitor food portions and body condition instead of treating exercise as permission for unlimited snacks.
Grooming & coat care
Brush the dense coat several times a week and check feathering for mats. Expect seasonal shedding and dry the coat after swimming. Routine ear checks, nail trims, and dental care are important.
Training & enrichment
Channel carrying and retrieving into games and useful cues. Reward four paws on the floor, gentle play, and a dependable drop-it. Build comfortable alone-time gradually despite a friendly reputation.
Health considerations
Ask about hip, elbow, eye, and cardiac screening. Discuss cancer history, skin and ear problems, and an appropriate weight plan with a vet. Screening reduces uncertainty but cannot guarantee a disease-free dog.
