Temperament & companionship
Many are highly responsive to movement and subtle cues. Herding instincts can show up as chasing bikes, staring, or attempting to control children and other pets. Sensitivity varies between individuals and working lines.
Exercise & daily life
Plan purposeful training, sniffing walks, rest, and activities such as scent work or appropriately paced dog sports. Constant ball throwing can build an athlete without teaching relaxation. Puppies need age-appropriate activity rather than forced running.
Grooming & coat care
Both rough and smooth coats need regular brushing; rough coats can mat behind the ears and around the legs. Expect seasonal shedding and check for debris after outdoor activity.
Training & enrichment
Reward calm behavior and teach an off-switch alongside useful tasks. Introduce traffic, people, and handling gradually. Seek qualified reward-based help early for chasing or reactivity instead of relying on exhaustion.
Health considerations
Ask about hip and eye screening and breed-relevant genetic tests, including collie eye anomaly. Discuss epilepsy history and any medication-sensitivity concerns with a vet; a DNA panel is not a substitute for clinical screening.
