Temperament & companionship
Many are attentive to their people and reserved with strangers. Working and companion lines can differ considerably. Protective tendencies need responsible management, not encouragement to be suspicious or confrontational.
Exercise & daily life
Build a routine of walks, sniffing, reward-based training, and rest. Provide secure space and controlled introductions to visitors. Match activity to age and joint health; puppies should not be pushed into repetitive high-impact exercise.
Grooming & coat care
Expect substantial shedding from the double coat and brush regularly, especially during seasonal changes. Both stock and longer coat varieties exist. Check skin, ears, nails, and teeth routinely.
Training & enrichment
Prioritize loose-leash walking, cooperative handling, settling, and calm responses to other dogs. Early positive experiences help, but socialization is not forced greeting. Seek qualified support for fear or reactivity.
Health considerations
Ask for hip and elbow evaluations and discuss degenerative myelopathy testing in context with a vet. Learn the signs of gastric dilatation-volvulus: unproductive retching and a distended abdomen warrant emergency care.
